Natalie, first time mom | Wellness Check-ins for two months

We were gifted hours with a doula from some family members. Because we aren’t from the Toronto area, we knew that our care would be coming via Zoom, phone or texts. My first Zoom call with Fiona was wonderful! She is knowledgeable and comforting and made me feel confident. She is easy to talk to; I never felt like my questions were silly or like I should be embarrassed to ask them. She has a way of providing excellent advice while still making you feel in control which is so important as a parent. She was so patient too. I forgot a few of our appointments and she didn’t seem annoyed at all. We would set up another time for a phone call and it was so nice to chat about the baby and about my recovery as a first time mom. In a time when it’s easy to forget about yourself because you have a new baby to care for, it’s nice that someone takes the time to check in on you too. If I lived in the area (and Covid permitted it), I would have loved to have someone so caring help support me during the birth and first days home. However, knowing she was there, even from afar, was so comforting. Even my mom, who is experienced with grandchildren, would say: “What does Fiona think about this? Or, send Fiona a message about this...”.

Finally, Fiona was a wonderful gift to us during those first weeks of Allie’s life. We appreciate her kindness and knowledge and the comfort she provided us. I miss chatting with her every few days and was sad when our time with her ended, but, thanks to her, I felt so confident navigating our new adventure with baby!

She took the time to listen to me about my struggles with breastfeeding my newborn, asked valid questions to get to the root of the issues, and provided some great recommendations that are working. She also gave great advice about how I can minimize the likelihood of me getting mastitis this time around, given that I’m an overproducer with extremely fatty milk. I definitely recommend her services for anyone with questions, struggling, or looking for reassurances.

The prenatal classes were wonderful, and the aid throughout the weeks of pregnancy was well appreciated. The doulas continued to stay in contact making sure I was mentally prepared to birth again, and because of the amazing prenatal support I received, I was able to have the confidence, and suppress the anxiety to have my baby. Your birth experience is dependent upon the support you have around you, and I’m happy that I had such kind, warm-hearted, powerful women to support me through this process.

When my fiancé and I were pregnant, we were unsure if we wanted to get a doula. It was our first child and we were not sure if this was a service that we needed and if it was worth the money. During my labour, Fiona took me and my fiancé through many techniques and positions that naturally turned her around and successfully got us through the whole labour.
